Martin Yale BCS212 Tabletop 12up Business Card Slitter Review

Overview: The Martin Yale BCS212 is a tabletop business card slitting machine that is designed to slit business cards that are printed twelve up on the page. It uses a two part process. First it slits your letter sized sheet into three strips that are 3.5″ x 8.5″ and then you feed those strips back through the machine to cut them into perfect 2″ x 3.5″ business cards. The BCS 212 allows you to get 20% more cards out of every printed letter sized sheets as compared a similar 10up business card slitting machine.

Strengths / Features: The BCS212 is capable of creating 375 cards per minute which translates to more than twenty two thousand business cards per hour. This means that you can potentially cut a run of five hundred business cards in less than two minutes and a run of one thousand business cards in less than four minutes. That type of productivity is excellent for on demand applications. The blades used by the BCS212 are semi-self sharpening. When used normally, the blades on the BCS-212 are designed to be used for years without the need for replacement. However, over time if you do damage or wear out the blades on this machine it is possible to replace them. The BCS212 can accept a stack of documents that is up to 5/8″ thick. This means that you can place a stack of sheets into the machine and let it do its work. If you are using letter sized sheets it takes a two step process to cut each card. However, the BCS-212 is also designed to cut cards that are printed four up on a 3-1/2″ x 8-1/2″ strip in a one step process for added productivity.

Weaknesses / Limitations: The BCS212 does have adjustable paper guides that will allow you to adjust the feeding of your sheets slightly for variances in your printing. However, it is really only designed to cut twelve up business cards. This means that it cannot be customized to cut special card sizes or be adjusted for gutter cutting. Unlike some of the larger business-card slitters that are available on the market, the BCS-212 does not have the ability to perforate or score documents. If you need these features you will want to look at the Intimus BCS-412 which is a twelve up business card slitter with the ability to score and perforate cards. In testing the BCS-212 I found that it did an excellent job with heavy stocks and with coated stocks (at least the ones I tried). However, it was a little bit tricky to get it to work with laminated papers. I was able to get it to work with a little bit of trying but it probably isn’t ideal for paper that has been laminated before cutting.

Recommendation: The BCS-212 is an excellent choice for small copy shops, human resource departments and small printers who want to produce short run business cards without waiting days or weeks for an outside organization to do the job. It is great for companies who need to create between a few hundred and a few thousand business cards per day and have a high quality color copier or digital color printer. The BCS-212 will make producing business cards both fast and easy. However, it is probably not the best fit for a large print house or production facility that is dedicated to printing tens of thousands of business cards per day.

Martin Yale Intimus SP100 Score and Perf Machine Review

Overview: The Martin Yale SP100 is designed as high speed desktop scoring and perforating machine for small to medium sized printers, copy shops or professional organizations. The SP101 can be used to produce tent style business cards, occasion cards and tickets and is ideal for scoring or perforating items up to twelve inches wide. This fully adjustable machine is ideal for creating all sorts of high quality customized documents without the need to outsource the work.

Strengths / Features: The SP100 is designed for scoring or perforating papers as light as 20lb bond and as heavy as 110lb index. This makes the SP100 incredibly versatile for use in the production of a huge variety of deliverables. It can be adjusted for running sheets that are between 3-1/2″ and 12″ inches wide. This makes the SP101 ideal for creating tickets, brochures, and tent style business cards. The SP101 comes with one scoring wheel and one 14-tooth perforating wheel. However it is possible to purchase and add additional scoring and perforating wheels to customize the output of the unit. The machine can score documents, perforate documents or do both at the same time depending on your needs. The SP101 is actually quite easy to set up. It has special hubs that make placing the scoring and perforating wheels simple.

Weaknesses / Limitations: The maximum width that the SP100 can handle is 12 inches. This means that it is not ideal for perforating legal sized church bulletins or for scoring single piece perfect binding covers for binding letter sized documents. These applications would require a larger sized scoring machine such as the 3800AP or 3800FC. The Intimus SP100 uses a wheel for scoring. For high coverage digital printed items, a scoring wheel can result in cracking. If you plan on scoring materials that are printed using your digital printing equipment this may present a problem for you. Digitally printed documents that need to be scored and folded where the folds will occur on top of printing will most likely want to investigate a compression scoring machine to reduce cracking.

Recommendation: The Martin Yale Intimus SP100 is an excellent choice for small printers, copy shops and organizations that need an automatic solution for scoring and perforating their documents. This machine is ideal for short run production of tent style business cards, occasion cards and tickets. However, larger printers and users who need to score or perforate sheets that are wider than twelve inches or that require folding on digitally printed areas will most likely want to look for a larger more feature rich machine.

Paper Shredder Security Ratings

A system to measure the effectiveness of paper shredders was felt necessary as paper shredders are an important defense against theft of identity and personal data.

Strip cutting shredders produce strips of waste paper that can be reassembled by determined thieves and investigators.

Since the purpose of shredding is to attain a level of security, ratings have now been developed to reflect the effectiveness of shredders.

Given below is a look at the security rating system that can assist you to set up a secure paper-shredding system for the home or business user. The criteria of the program will depend on the importance and sensitivity of the documents that need to be destroyed.

Personal details such as names, addresses, phone numbers, social security numbers, date of birth etc, are basic and will need to be fully protected.

FACTA has given guidelines that require such personal information must be destroyed adequately and has approved shredding as an acceptable choice.

Another method of grading the security level of shredders is Deutsche Industrial Norm or DIN. This method of European origin sets six levels of security given below.

Level 1 – is a general to low level, fit for general documents

Level 2 – is a low to medium level and suits internal papers

Level 3 – is a confidential to medium level and is great for documents which contain personal as well as confidential data

Level 4 – is for sensitive to medium to high levels and are good for confidential documents

Level 5 – is classified as high to the maximum level

Level 6 – is absolutely top secret and requires the highest level of security that is possible.

The type of shredder chosen should reflect the level of security sought to be obtained using that shredder.

A strip cutting shredder presents the lowest level of security. Information thieves are known to successfully reassemble shredded documents in strip form and retrieve valuable information.

The next level of security is achieved by the Confetti shredder, or cross cutting shredders. This type of shredding is adequate for most other levels of security sought.

As such, these are popular for both home and small business users. The waste generated is of the cross cut or confetti type.

The security level classification is normally printed on the packaging material of the shredder and this must be studied prior to purchase the type that is needed. Most businesses take back up copies on CDs, floppy disks and other storage devices, which may also need to be shredded.

Apart from these, cardboard and other items might need to be shredded too. The functions that the shredder can perform and the materials that can be shredded will also be normally available on the packing material and this will help you choose correctly.

Additional power may be needed to do heavy-duty work and this too must be taken into account prior to purchase.

FACTA ruling has increased the liability of individuals and businesses to take adequate measures to protect personal information.

Victims of identity theft can now recover damages from you up to $1,000 an incident and State and local bodies can levy fines of $2,500 an incident when personal information has not been properly destroyed.

Some establishments now have multiple shredders to handle different levels of security in different departments. Responsible shredding can be simple if you are aware of the levels of security needed to be adhered to.
