Martin Yale Intimus SP100 Score and Perf Machine Review
Overview: The Martin Yale SP100 is designed as high speed desktop scoring and perforating machine for small to medium sized printers, copy shops or professional organizations. The SP101 can be used to produce tent style business cards, occasion cards and tickets and is ideal for scoring or perforating items up to twelve inches wide. This fully adjustable machine is ideal for creating all sorts of high quality customized documents without the need to outsource the work.
Strengths / Features: The SP100 is designed for scoring or perforating papers as light as 20lb bond and as heavy as 110lb index. This makes the SP100 incredibly versatile for use in the production of a huge variety of deliverables. It can be adjusted for running sheets that are between 3-1/2″ and 12″ inches wide. This makes the SP101 ideal for creating tickets, brochures, and tent style business cards. The SP101 comes with one scoring wheel and one 14-tooth perforating wheel. However it is possible to purchase and add additional scoring and perforating wheels to customize the output of the unit. The machine can score documents, perforate documents or do both at the same time depending on your needs. The SP101 is actually quite easy to set up. It has special hubs that make placing the scoring and perforating wheels simple.
Weaknesses / Limitations: The maximum width that the SP100 can handle is 12 inches. This means that it is not ideal for perforating legal sized church bulletins or for scoring single piece perfect binding covers for binding letter sized documents. These applications would require a larger sized scoring machine such as the 3800AP or 3800FC. The Intimus SP100 uses a wheel for scoring. For high coverage digital printed items, a scoring wheel can result in cracking. If you plan on scoring materials that are printed using your digital printing equipment this may present a problem for you. Digitally printed documents that need to be scored and folded where the folds will occur on top of printing will most likely want to investigate a compression scoring machine to reduce cracking.
Recommendation: The Martin Yale Intimus SP100 is an excellent choice for small printers, copy shops and organizations that need an automatic solution for scoring and perforating their documents. This machine is ideal for short run production of tent style business cards, occasion cards and tickets. However, larger printers and users who need to score or perforate sheets that are wider than twelve inches or that require folding on digitally printed areas will most likely want to look for a larger more feature rich machine.

Martin Yale BCS212 Tabletop 12up Business Card Slitter Review
Overview: The Martin Yale BCS212 is a tabletop business card slitting machine that is designed to slit business cards that are printed twelve up on the page. It uses a two part process. First it slits your letter sized sheet into three strips that are 3.5″ x 8.5″ and then you feed those strips back through the machine to cut them into perfect 2″ x 3.5″ business cards. The BCS 212 allows you to get 20% more cards out of every printed letter sized sheets as compared a similar 10up business card slitting machine.
Strengths / Features: The BCS212 is capable of creating 375 cards per minute which translates to more than twenty two thousand business cards per hour. This means that you can potentially cut a run of five hundred business cards in less than two minutes and a run of one thousand business cards in less than four minutes. That type of productivity is excellent for on demand applications. The blades used by the BCS212 are semi-self sharpening. When used normally, the blades on the BCS-212 are designed to be used for years without the need for replacement. However, over time if you do damage or wear out the blades on this machine it is possible to replace them. The BCS212 can accept a stack of documents that is up to 5/8″ thick. This means that you can place a stack of sheets into the machine and let it do its work. If you are using letter sized sheets it takes a two step process to cut each card. However, the BCS-212 is also designed to cut cards that are printed four up on a 3-1/2″ x 8-1/2″ strip in a one step process for added productivity.
Weaknesses / Limitations: The BCS212 does have adjustable paper guides that will allow you to adjust the feeding of your sheets slightly for variances in your printing. However, it is really only designed to cut twelve up business cards. This means that it cannot be customized to cut special card sizes or be adjusted for gutter cutting. Unlike some of the larger business-card slitters that are available on the market, the BCS-212 does not have the ability to perforate or score documents. If you need these features you will want to look at the Intimus BCS-412 which is a twelve up business card slitter with the ability to score and perforate cards. In testing the BCS-212 I found that it did an excellent job with heavy stocks and with coated stocks (at least the ones I tried). However, it was a little bit tricky to get it to work with laminated papers. I was able to get it to work with a little bit of trying but it probably isn’t ideal for paper that has been laminated before cutting.
Recommendation: The BCS-212 is an excellent choice for small copy shops, human resource departments and small printers who want to produce short run business cards without waiting days or weeks for an outside organization to do the job. It is great for companies who need to create between a few hundred and a few thousand business cards per day and have a high quality color copier or digital color printer. The BCS-212 will make producing business cards both fast and easy. However, it is probably not the best fit for a large print house or production facility that is dedicated to printing tens of thousands of business cards per day.

Martin Yale 1701 Autofolder Automatic Setup Paper Folding Machine Review
Overview: The Martin Yale 1701 Autofolder is a high quality auto setup paper folder that is ideal for churches, small copy shops, mailrooms, or corporate departments that have numerous users and/or have a need for multiple types of folds. It is an automatic setup folder which simply means that you can press a button or two on the machine in order to choose the desired paper size and folding style. The fold plates move into position automatically. This makes the Martin Yale 1701 easy to setup and easy to use even for users who don’t have any training or experience using a paper folding machine.
Strengths / Features: One of the best things about the 1701 Martin Yale Autofolder is the cost. It is the lowest cost auto setup folder available on the market. With a selling price of around $1500 it is priced similarly to manual setup paper folder from other manufacturers but is much easier to use. The auto setup features of the 1701 make it incredibly simple to operate. You simply choose the size of paper that you want to fold and the folding pattern that you want to use. In just a couple of seconds, the machine will move the folding plates into position and you are ready to begin folding. This makes the 1701 an excellent choice for organizations that use multiple folding patterns or who have users who struggle to set up complicated mechanical equipment. The Martin Yale 1701 is capable of handling letter size, legal size and A4 paper. It can create be set to six different folding patterns including: letter fold, half fold, z-fold, double parallet, right angle and baronial. Or if you have a custom fold or need to fold a sheet as small as 3-1/2″ x 5″, it can be manually adjusted to handle these as well. The 1701 can fold stapled sets of up to 5 sheets through its manual bypass. These have to be fed into the machine one set a time. The 1701 has a feed tray that is capable of handling up to 150 sheets of 20lb paper. This helps to improve productivity without having to worry about reloading the folder every few seconds.
Weaknesses / Limitations: The 1701 does not have an adjustable speed setting. This means that the speed of the folder cannot be reduced for folding specialty papers or thicker stocks. The Martin Yale 1701 is an excellent choice for folding 20lb, 24lb and 28lb paper. However, it is not designed for folding heavy card stocks, slick glossy papers or papers with special coatings. These types of stocks will most likely cause paper jams inside the 1701 folder. Although the 1701 is capable of folding letter, legal and A4 paper it is not capable of handling 11″ x 17″ or A3 sized papers. If you are looking for an automatic setup folder that can handle these larger sizes of paper you will need to check out the Intimus 2051 or a similar commercial grade folding machine. Although the 1701 paper folder is an automatic setup folder it is still necessary in some cases and for some folding patterns to adjust the output stacker wheel manually. Only the largest automatic setup folders adjust the stacker wheel automatically. The 1701 requires removal of the side covers and the top roller safety cover to clean the rollers. Once these parts are removed the rollers can be easily cleaned, but the process of gaining access to the rollers takes about 10 to 15 minutes. Most users will only need to do this about every 6 months.
Recommendation: The Martin Yale 1701 is best suited for organizations that have numerous users who may not know how to manually set up a folding machine, or for organizations that frequently change fold types and don’t want to hassle with constant set-ups. This paper folding machine makes changing paper sizes and folding patterns simple and is ideal for users who will only use the folding machine on an occasional basis, and may not remember how to set up the machine every time. However, organizations that need to fold sheets larger than legal size or heavier paper stocks will most likely find that the 1701 folder will not meet their needs. These users should consider a larger automatic setup folding machine such as the Intimus 2051 or the Formax FD380.

Intimus GC208 Gutter Cut Business Card Slitter Review
Overview: The Intimus GC208 Business Card Slitter is designed for creating small runs of high quality full bleed business cards without the need to outsource. Any organization with a color copier and a frequent need to order business cards will find that the GC208 pays for itself quite nicely. It is ideal for printers, copy shops, in-plant print shops and human resource departments looking to produce their own high quality, full bleed business cards. The GC208 comes with a CD on which you will find templates to help with the layout of your business cards in four popular applications: Microsoft Word, Microsoft Publisher, Quark and Illustrator.
Strengths / Features: Although there are a number of different business card slitters available on the market, the GC-208 is one of the only gutter cut business card slitters that is commercially available. It is designed to produce high quality full bleed business cards out of letter sized sheets printed on your color laser printer or photocopier. By overprinting the template, it is possible to have your graphics run to the very edge of for full bleed business cards. The GC208 business card slitter is capable of completing up to 300 finished business cards per minute. This is fast enough for commercial applications where speed and productivity are essential. This machine has a feeder that is capable of handling a stack of sheets up to 5/8″ thick. You can load the sheets into the feeder, place the weights on top of the stock and let the machine do its work. The GC208 is a floor standing unit that comes mounted on castors. The business card slitting unit is mounted on a special waste bin for no-mess production. Plus, the whole unit is mounted on wheels to allow you to push the unit out of the way when it is not in use.
Weaknesses / Limitations: The GC208 business card slitter requires a two step operation for cutting business cards. First, you feed the letter sized sheets into the lower station of the machine and it cuts them into two 3.5″ strips and cuts the waste off the sides. Then you feed the cut strips sideways through the upper station to separate the four, full bleed imprinted cards. It’s best to do all of your length-wise cuts, and then all of your side-ways cuts. Although the machine is fast (300 cards per minute) cutting business cards is still a hands on process. Because full bleed imprinting requires an overprint on all four sides of the card, the GC208 is limited to producing only 8 cards per 8
